Takayama Japan A Nice Trip to Enjoy

Takayama in Japan is in the mountainous region. Mrupupup went to Takayama from Singapore. Mrupupup took a flight from Singapore to Nagoya airport. Then from the airport change the voucher of the Takayama Tourist pass for unlimited train travel. The voucher was changed at the Nagoya Train information counter at Nagoya Train Station area (a bit hard to find). If you get lost in Nagoya Train Station, just ask and the railway people would direct you.

After changing for the 5 days Takayama Train pass, go take train to Takayama (about 1 hour 30 mins from Nagoya). Alight at Takayama train station, Mrupupup went to Washington Plaza Hotel Takayama. This hotel was very convenient as it was directly opposite the Takayama Train Station. The hotel was ok, but the hotel staff were a bit not friendly though. The room was alright and the best deal for this place was the close proximity to the train station.

Mrupupup's views of Takyama was that:
1. Sleepy place
- The shops all close quite early around 5pm. The main shopping street was not so visible to tourist and shops all close quite early. Walking the streets around 9pm was a quiet experience with few people. However, the eating places were still open till 10pm

2. Do try the Hida Beef
- Mrupupup tried out the Hida beef which was famous in the region and comparable to Kobe Beef. The Hida Beef was served in various forms like grilled, in soba noodles, in buns or with sushi.

3.The Sanmachi Old Houses (Edo period - 1600s)
- One should visit the Sanmachi Suji Old Houses which were nice and one could see the old style Japanese houses. Took some photos and enjoy the ambience of the old houses which still have restaurants, sakae drinking and lots of history. The old houses would be illuminated with nice lanterns at night.

4. Enjoy the weather
- The air in Takayama was very fresh and one could just walk along the river. The main river was nice with wild ducks and rushing waters over stones.

5. Morning Market
- Along the river, there would be old markets set up. Mrupupup bought fresh big sized apples and strawberry. The people in the morning markets were nice. Besides fruits, one could buy fresh produce, souvenirs, Japanese sweets and food.

Takayama in Mrupupup's view was a pleasant place and lot slower than city areas like Tokyo. The place was refreshing and had a bit of history in this place. A traveller's tip look for an old style coffee place named Coffee Don (set up in 1952 and located in the main shopping district Honmachi) and just sit back and relax. Enjoy the great coffee with an apple pie and excellent jazz music played from an old style radio system.

Takayama - very nice place in Japan.
